Crathes Castle
Crathes is an enchanting castle, rich in atmosphere and legend.
For almost four centuries, Crathes was the home of the Burnetts, a family whose lineage includes generals, admirals, judges and even a Governor of New York. The family history also includes strange tales of mermaids and ghosts... Almost unchanged since it was first built in the 16th century, its glorious architecture is reminiscent of the great French chateaux.
Beautiful in summer, peaceful in winter The High Hall, with its huge arched ceiling, fine portraiture and handsome stone fireplace (above which lies the Horn of Leys, gifted to the first Burnett by Robert the Bruce), has an easy refinement that lends itself well to entertaining up to 40 guests for dinner. The newly refurbished Horsemill Restaurant offers a separate circular venue for dining and dancing for 60 guests. Guided tours can also be provided round the castle, where there is great variety and interest to each room, such as the Room of the Nine Nobles and the Green Lady`s Room. Marquees for larger numbers can be erected in the beautiful castle grounds.
